The Fundamentals of Home Heating and Cooling

Here’s a brief rundown of the fundamentals of heating and cooling:

1. Your home’s heating and cooling systems are divided into three groups. A gravity furnace system is one of them; a radiant heating system is another; and a ducted, or “forced air” system is the third.

2. In many houses, the gravity furnace device transfers hot air from a heater situated on the ground floor or in the basement. This system distributes heat and cool air in the house using huge ducts and pipes. The heated air rises through the device, then sinks as it cools, returning to the furnace to be heated and repeating the cycle. This is often referred to as central heating and cooling. The gravity furnace can be powered by a thermostat.

3. Radiant heating systems, which use water, electricity, and hot steam, are the second type of heating system. A central boiler system heats water and circulates it via tubes and pipes throughout your home, distributing heat to individual rooms through “radiator.” The water returns to being heated as it cools. To provide ventilation for smaller parts of the house, an air conditioner may also be installed in a window.

4. An electric radiant heating system is another form of radiant heating system. The electric radiant system uses electric resistance baseboards or a system of cables and foils embedded in the floors and ceilings to distribute heat in your house.

5. Ducted air systems are a third type of heating and cooling system. Since it can distribute both heated and cooled air through the ducted air system, this type of system is common in residential homes.

6. A geothermal system, also known as a “heat pump,” is a system that uses the heat in the ground to heat and cool a home. The yard has a tubing device that goes into the property. Since the ground is colder than the air in the summer, the heat pump cools your home by trading the warmer indoor temperature for the cooler outdoor temperature. The ground is warmer than the colder air temperature in the winter, so the machine extracts the heat to warm the home.
