Allen spent several years with Magic Slim and the Teardrops. During that time, the band recorded Black Tornado, Snakebite and Blue Magic, the latter two nominated for Traditional Blues Album of the Year in 2001 and 2003. Slim and the Teardrops were nominated for Blues Band of the Year in 1999, 2001 and 2002 finally winning the prestigious award in 2003.
